Getting rail on the right track

In the next 30 years, Houston is projected to add more than three and a half million more people to the city. David Crossley, president of the Gulf Coast Institute, says that with the job and population growth that Houston will experience in the coming years, the area, “can’t support much more in the way of cars, unless you take away all these houses and jobs and businesses and so forth to put the roads in, which doesn’t make any sense.” The extension of light rail through Houston’s urban core is an important step toward preserving Houston’s green space by promoting denser and more sustainable living spaces.

 


The Hype About Hydrogen

In his 2003 State of the Union address, President Bush announced a $1.2 billion research initiative, “so that the first car driven by a child born today could be powered by hydrogen, and pollution-free.” The April 2003 issue of Wired magazine proclaimed, “How Hydrogen can save America.” General Motors has said the promise of hydrogen cars justifies delaying fuel-efficiency regulations.
