Houston Scholar Program: Fall 2007
On a bright and sunny autumn Saturday morning (October 13th), CLEAN and the Endangered Species Media Project (ESMP) set out with students from the Houston Scholar Program (HSP) to perform a canoe cleanup of sections of Houston’s Buffalo Bayou. HSP is a selective academic organization providing talented but underserved Houston-area students with an enriched boarding experience to increase their success and satisfaction in local college preparatory schools and, subsequently, in fine colleges and universities. An enthusiastic group of 20 students and three counselors joined in to help remove more than a hundred pounds of rubbish that was trapped in the natural impediments of tree roots and branches in the waterway. As we made our way down the bayou, we spotted a number of wildlife including frogs, fish, dragonflies, a beautiful white heron and there was even a beaver sighting.

The event was covered by KUHF Radio, the Examiner Newspaper Group and Univision. Thanks to all our young volunteers!

YES Prep : Spring 2008
CLEAN teamed up with over a hundred enthusiastic students from YES Prep public charter school to perform a cleanup of Tony Marron Park, on Houston’s East side. YES Prep is a free, open-enrollment public school system that serves low-income minority students in 6th-12th grade. Its charter mandates that students must be accepted to a four-year college in order to receive their diplomas and is the only school in greater Houston to make Newsweek’s list of the top 100 public schools in America for two years in a row.

In all, the students helped remove more than a hundred pounds of rubbish that had found its way into the park and neighboring Buffalo Bayou. The event was covered by KUHF Radio (the NPR affiliate for Houston) and the Houston Banner. Thanks to all our young volunteers!
