Buffalo Bayou: A Historic Landmark
In addition to creating a documentary and recording the history of Buffalo Bayou, the Endangered Species Media Project will be working towards designating Buffalo Bayou as a National Historic waterway. This would make Buffalo the 8th historic waterway in the United States.
National Historic Landmarks are nationally significant historic places designated by the Secretary of the Interior because they possess exceptional value in illustrating or interpreting the history of the United States. Landmarks may be designated through broad organized initiatives called theme studies that examine related places linked by a single subject or theme.
The Bayou truly has a remarkable history that should be protected for everyone. Designating Buffalo Bayou as a National Historic Landmark will:
- Help ensure long-term preservation of the bayou
- Allow the National Historic Landmarks Assistance Initiative to promote preservation through technical assistance
- Build partnerships between National Park Service and other Federal Agencies; state, tribal, and local governments; nonprofit organizations and individuals to enhance protection
- Educate the public about the landmark to build support for their protection and that of the nation's heritage
- Teach the stories inherent and significant to the bayou
