Friends of Architecture
Featured in the River Oaks Examiner, July 2005

A small group of residents concerned about the architectural integrity of the community has reached out to concerned neighbors and formed The Friends of River Oaks.

Holding its first official meeting June 15 at the home of Kelley and Harper Trammel, the group got together to discuss the loss of 24 historically significant homes in River Oaks in the past year and scheduled demolition of four others.

“I’m very concerned when a decision is made to demolish a historic home, especially so quickly,” says Roxanne Bell Casscells, one of the organizers. “We know there are people out there who care and they need to have a voice.”

Originally consisting of Casscells, Minnette Boesel, Jane Dale Owen, Kelly Trammell and Celia and Jay Munisteri, the group decided to open its doors to anyone who shared their concerns.

“We discuss what can be done,” Casscells says. “We feel wonderful about the initial turnout,” which she put at about 50.

Bart Truxillo, past chairman and a member of the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission gave a brief talk on the historical significance of River Oaks and designation requirements.

Guests included George Murray, Mariquita Masterson, Lynn Edmundson and Dr. Denton Cooley. Applications were distributed for homeowners to designate their own homes as historic landmarks. Friends of River Oaks is embarking on a mission to designate 10 homes within the next year.

The group will meet again Oct. 5.
